Kemil Beach Surprise Proposal | Paul and Kaite’s Foggy Lake Michigan Engagement

Kemil Beach Surprise Proposal | Paul and Kaite’s Foggy Lake Michigan Engagement

Some moments do not go according to plan, but somehow they still turn out exactly the way they are supposed to. This Kemil Beach Surprise Proposal was the perfect reminder of that.

Paul reached out weeks ahead of time to begin planning a surprise proposal for Kaite along the shores of Lake Michigan. He put so much thought into every detail, from choosing the location to carefully watching the weather forecast leading up to the day. We even did a location scout just 48 hours beforehand to make sure everything was perfect.

At the time, the forecast looked ideal. Mild spring temperatures, partial sunshine, and soft clouds over the lake. The kind of evening photographers hope for.

Then the weather shifted.

By the day of the proposal, the sunshine had completely disappeared. Instead, we were greeted with full overcast skies, dense fog rolling in from Lake Michigan, and temperatures hovering around 41 degrees. Add in the strong breeze coming off the water at Kemil Beach, and it definitely was not the dreamy spring evening we originally imagined.

But honestly, that ended up becoming part of what made this Kemil Beach Surprise Proposal feel so special.

Because the second Paul got down on one knee, none of the weather mattered anymore.

The fog, the cold air, the gray skies… it all faded into the background as Kaite focused on the moment unfolding in front of her. In a way, the unexpected weather almost made everything feel more intimate and cinematic. The beach felt quiet and isolated, wrapped in soft fog that made the entire scene feel like it existed in its own little world.

One of the things I love most about photography is that real moments do not wait for perfect conditions. Sometimes the most emotional memories happen in the middle of imperfect situations, and those are often the moments people remember the most.

After the proposal, we decided to hold off on their full portrait session until later this spring or early summer, when we can hopefully get those warmer temperatures and glowing Lake Michigan sunsets. But honestly, this Kemil Beach Surprise Proposal did not need perfect weather to be meaningful.

It was already perfect, exactly as it happened.

Congratulations again, Paul and Kaite. I cannot wait to capture the next chapter of your story.
