Cobus Creek Prom Photos | Dustin and Morgan’s Pre-Prom Session

Prom season is always one of my favorite times of year to photograph, and these Cobus Creek Prom Photos with Dustin and Morgan were such a fun way to spend part of my Saturday afternoon.

We met up at Cobus Creek in Elkhart, Indiana before Morgan’s senior prom, and despite shooting in the middle of the afternoon around 2PM, we were still able to create some beautiful images together. Anyone who photographs outdoors knows that harsh afternoon sunlight can be one of the most difficult lighting situations to work in. Bright overhead sun creates strong shadows, uneven highlights, and can make people uncomfortable in front of the camera pretty quickly.

But that is where experience and creativity come in.

Instead of fighting the light, I worked with it by strategically using shaded areas throughout Cobus Creek and incorporating added flash when needed to balance out harsh shadows and create more flattering light. One of the things I love about locations like Cobus Creek is that even during difficult lighting conditions, there are always opportunities to find little pockets of great light if you know where to look.

Morgan absolutely rocked her bold blue gown, which stood out beautifully against the natural greens of the park, and Dustin cleaned up pretty good too. Even though Dustin graduated last year, these two were completely in sync the entire session. They made everything feel effortless with the way they interacted naturally, laughed together, and stayed relaxed in front of the camera.

These Cobus Creek Prom Photos are also a reminder that beautiful portraits are not just about waiting for perfect golden hour conditions. While photographers definitely love soft sunset light, real life does not always work around ideal timing. Sometimes sessions happen in the middle of the afternoon, schedules are tight, and you simply adapt to the conditions you are given.

That ability to adjust, create, and still deliver beautiful images is such an important part of photography.

Dustin and Morgan absolutely trusted the process, and the end result was a gallery filled with personality, connection, and timeless prom memories. I hope they had an amazing time at prom afterward, because they definitely looked incredible heading into it.
